- Noises: Popping, knocking, or cracking sounds are common indicators that sediment has built up and is trapping water underneath it.
- Discolored water: If you notice discoloration when the water is hot, the inside of your water heater may be corroded.

What Are The Different Types Of Water Heaters?
- Storage tank: The most common type, where water is heated and stored in an insulated tank until needed.
- Tankless: Uses heating coils to heat water as needed, and are more energy-efficient than storage tanks.
- Heat pump: Captures heat from the air and transfers it to the water, using about 60 percent less energy than standard electric water heaters.
How Long Do Water Heaters Last?
What Safety Features Do Hot Water Heaters Have?
Temperature Release Valve
Heated water in a 40 gallon tank can expand by over half a gallon in size. The temperature release valve serves to relieve this excess pressure.
Seismic Straps
Building codes recommend that water heaters should be braced to prevent damage during seismic activity, where earthquakes are common. To secure the water tank properly, the straps should be fitted to wood blocking strips secured against the near wall. Use heavy-duty steel brackets to support these blocks and fit them against the water heater.
Bollards
If you’ve placed your water heater in your garage or other area where it may need protected from physical damage, bollards are a great way to do so. Most bollards are around 36” high and about 4” in diameter and are usually made out of an impact resistant material.
Safety Pans
A sturdy heat-resistant drain pan should be placed underneath the water heater in indoor environments. This will protect your floor, and any nearby individuals from the effects of water heater leaks or pressure valve runoffs.
How Do I Change The Temperature Of My Water Heater?
A water heater’s thermostat controls the temperature of the water inside the tank and can normally be found on the front of the unit near the bottom. Normally, you can set the temperature anywhere between 120 and 180 degrees Fahrenheit (49 to 82 degrees Celsius). The water temperature setting recommended by most manufacturers is between 120 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit (49 to 60 degrees Celsius). This is hot enough to be sufficient for household use, but not hot enough that it can pose a scalding risk.
